BLUE EARTH
JAYHAWKS
“While some Jayhawks fans will cite Hollywood Town Hall (1992) or Tomorrow the Green Grass (1995) as their favorites, Blue Earth -- augmented in this re-release by three previously unheard demos – remains this writer’s favorite.”
-Chris Morris, Senior Writer, Billboard
On the heels of reissuing The Replacements and The Flaming Lips, Rykodisc is proud to continue to bring the best of the Restless Records catalog to the masses. The Jayhawks’ Blue Earth will be released on April 22nd, complete with three previously unreleased tracks: Fingernail Moon, Two Minute Pop Song and Nightshade.
Blue Earth is a memorable showcase of Mark Olson and Gary Louris’ songwriting, harmonies, evocative pop and poignant country rock sensibilities. Originally released in 1989, two years before the release of Uncle Tupelo’s landmark debut, Blue Earth is truly a seminal record that bridged the gap Gram Parsons left open and created a template for bands like Uncle Tupelo and Wilco. Recorded when, as Chris Morris points out in his extensive linear notes, “No Depression was a long-forgotten song by the Carter Family, “Americana” was a term several years away from currency and no one had yet appended “alt-“ to “country”, the Jayhawks were ahead of their time.
Touring extensively behind Blue Earth, the Jayhawks won fans, critical accolades and a label deal with American Recordings. Their scope and influence grew with the releases of the excellent Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass. Tomorrow the Green Grass would come to be Mark Olson’s last album with the Jayhawks; he left in 1995 to start the Original Harmony Ridge Creek Drippers with his wife Victoria Williams. Gary Louris and Marc Perlman carried on to release Sound of Lies in 1997 and Smile in 2000. The Jayhawks’ sixth record, Rainy Day Music, is being released on Lost Highway in April of 2003.
