11/10/02 The Jayhawks' new album Rainy Day Music will be released April 1, 2003 on Lost Highway. Word!
10/09/02 The latest information from the Jayhawks' management on the new record's label..."The Jayhawks latest new recording for American Records will be marketed and distributed by Lost Highway because both American and Lost Highway are affiliated labels of Universal."
09/23/02 No you aren't hearing things! The Jayhawks song "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" is featured in a new Ralph Lauren Polo Blue fragrance commercial for radio and tv. And hopefully we will be hearing the new Jayhawks album in January or February 2003. Those of you that have attended recent shows will be familiar with the new songs but some will have new titles on the album. "Rotterdam" is going to be called "All The Right Reasons" and "Pretty Little Hairdo" is now "Save It For A Rainy Day".
08/01/02 An album update from Gary Louris..."The record is done except for mastering and the final tweaking of the sequence. All lead vocals, rhythm guitars, bass and drums are live. There are a couple songs where everything is live. Those are the songs where we had Stephen playing steel, Ethan Johns playing acoustic, and Chris Stills singing backup. Other guest stars are Matthew Sweet and Jacob Dylan on vocals, and Bernie Leadon on banjo. And of course the beautiful Richard Causon on keyboards. Not a Pro Tool or computer could be seen for miles of the studio, which was Sunset Sound Studio 3. The vocal room that I sang and played guitar in was the famous Buffalo Springfield room, where "Mr. Soul" and many other classics were cut. The entire BS band fit in to this 11 by 14 room! Ethan was the right man for the job, and worked well with Rick Rubin, which was a major relief. The record took seven weeks to record and mix. It is yet untitled but sounds like everything and nothing we've ever done."
07/28/02 Former Jayhawk Mark Olson has released a new album December's Child and it features the song that he and Gary Louris wrote together "Say You'll Be Mine". You can listen to a bit of the song on the Dualtone site.
06/25/02 The Jayhawks In The Studio photos are up in the Gallery. For those who have heard some of the new songs during the acoustic tours, possible song candidates to be included on the album are "Angelyne", "Please Don't Ask", "One Man's Problem", "Rotterdam", and "Pretty Little Hairdo".
06/15/02 In the studio....the Jayhawks have been working on the new album in LA for a couple of weeks now. Marc is finishing up his parts today and Gary and Tim will remain behind to finish. Marc says it's too early to tell how it's going to turn out. Hopefully some studio pics to come...
05/24/02 Good news! Finally a firm date for the Jayhawks to start recording the next album. The latest from Gary: "We are set to go in the studio now officially on June 3rd at Sunset Sound in LA with Ethan Johns at the helm and Rick Rubin peeking over his shoulder. This should be the most acoustic based, stripped down, and live record the Jayhawks have ever made....at least that is the plan." Stay tuned...
03/29/02 An update from Gary Louris: The Jayhawks will begin recording May 15th in LA with Ethan Johns* producing and Rick Ruben executive producing. Stephen McCarthy will be joining them in the studio. Before then they will be doing a tour of the south and west coast as an acoustic three piece, Gary noted they are trying to be as "intimate musically as possible" this time and Marc Perlman is even bringing his mandolin! They will be performing the new song "Say You'll Be Mine" which Gary wrote last fall with former Jayhawk Mark Olson. It was originally intended for the movie The Rookie but ultimately was not used. They recorded a version of it (two takes) at Mark's studio and it will be included on Mark's upcoming album. It is possible it might also end up in one form or another on the Jayhawks' new album. No promises though... The song "I'm Your Man" from the Monster's Ball soundtrack was written specifically for the movie, scoring for the movie was done by ex-Jayhawks' drummer Thad Spencer's music house Ashe & Spencer.
*(Ethan Johns is the son of legendary producer Glyn Johns. He has worked as a drummer/guitarist on albums by Emmylou Harris and John Hiatt. He produced the final Whiskeytown album Pneumonia and Ryan Adams' recent solo albums Heartbreaker and Gold)
03/13/02 Gary Louris is listed as a special guest on the forthcoming album by former Jayhawk Mark Olson on the Dualtone Records website. We will have to wait until June 11th to hear the results.
02/26/02 Some more information on the recent Louris/Olson song collaboration is included in a recent article in Billboard.com. Plenty of other tidbits including the latest word that the Jayhawks will be going into the studio sometime before May 1st. In other news, Gary Louris makes a guest appearance on guitar and backing vocals on the long awaited new album by former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford. It is now available on his website.
02/08/02 A new Jayhawks' song, "I'm Your Man" is included on the soundtrack of the movie Monster's Ball starring Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry. The soundtrack was scored and compiled by former Jayhawks drummer Thad Spencer's company Asche & Spencer who produce music for movies and commercials. A column in the Star Tribune has a Real Player link to the song (you will need to scroll down)
01/14/02 The Jayhawks (Gary, Marc and Tim) are on the road doing an acoustic tour of the east coast. Lucky fans in attendance have been treated to new songs that may find their way onto the new album they will be recording early this year in LA. Read a message from the Jayhawks management!
01/04/02 The Jayhawks are the featured artist of the day on musicphotography.com. Check out a photo of Gary Louris and Stephen McCarthy taken at the recent First Avenue show in Minneapolis. In other .com news the Jayhawks official website has been gone for awhile now and probably won't be up under thejayhawks.com domain name which was not renewed by Sony. It is now being held hostage by "domain name thief guy"...
