Talking Mark Olson / Kansas City, Mo. 2-16-08

It's 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, 2-18. The drive from C.R. to K.C. was pleasant with clear roads and sunshine. It wasn't even all that cold outside.

Now, I had intended to be home yesterday afternoon, but got stuck in Newton, Iowa Sunday due to hazardous road conditions on I-80 from there > Iowa City > Cedar Rapids. I live an hour and a half from Newton. I left at 10:30 a.m. this morning and it took me 3 hours and 15 minutes to get home. I lost count of how many ditched vehicles there were on both sides of the road. I saw remnants of a 9 vehicle pile up at one point.

Did I really mind it all though? No, and I would do it all over again to have another weekend like the one I just had in Kansas City.

Arrived for soundcheck, then met up with Jessica (KU97) at the bar. Mark invited us to sit with them at an oversized booth. Beth showed up soon after. The 6 of us sat there for about an hour, had a couple of drinks and yakked away about just "stuff" like songs, work, school, traveling, religion, politics

A lil different setlist from what they've done so far on the entire tour. I've highlighted surprises in red. Mark broke out the harmonica for "Two Angels" for the first time. Ingunn thought I better document the harmonica event w/pictures and I did. PICS WILL BE UP SOON, maybe not until tomorrow (Tuesday)

SETLIST:

1) WINTER SONG
2) OVER MY SHOULDER
3) MICHAEL'S BOAT
4) NATIONAL EXPRESS
5) SALVATION BLUES
6) TWO ANGELS
7) DECEMBER'S CHILD
8) SISTER CRY
9) TEARS FROM ABOVE
10) BLUE
11) SANDY DENNY
12) BIG OLD SIGN
13) MY CAROL
14) HUMMINGBIRD
15) KING OF KINGS
16) MICHELE'S SPEECH
17) CLIFTON BRIDGE

ENCORE #1:

18) POOR G.W.
19) MY OWN JO ELLEN

ENCORE #2:

20) LOOK INTO THE NIGHT
21) STILL WE HAVE A FRIEND IN YOU

Yes, it's recorded like last time, and this time, Lilady likes her brand new XLR Soundboard cable.

So he had wanted to take the Cedar Rapids welcome sign with him when he was here, but I told him I better have it protected so it wouldn't get damaged on their long journey....and I'd bring it w/me to KC. Turns out the laminators said it was too thick to laminate, so I found a $25 black frame, that kind of looks like black painted wood. It looked so much cooler w/that frame, I wish I had thought of framing it for the show...but I hadn't even thought that he'd ask to take it home. I took another pic before I packed it into my trunk. So anyway, we stood there in the rain while he pulled it out of my car and into the van. I did laminate a front cover entertainment section write-up they did here locally about him and gave him that too. It's REAL nice. I'm going to attempt to scan that article and put it up on Flickr along w/my show pics. I think my town treated them really well while they were here.

Beth and I split a room w/her daughter Sat night and we ate b-fast at some groovy artsy hippy joint. Ever have banana-walnut french toast w/caramel sauce all over it? Wow.

Wonder HOW in the heck did "Sold-out Salina" go?

Mark called it his "Kingdom". Beth was gonna go after KC show, but she couldn't get in since it was sold out. But, she knows the Salina guy from last Sept. KC show who prob. was there.....hmmmmm. Paging Salina guy.

Chances for the Surf in Clearlake Iowa for O/L tour are prob. real good.

Michele and Ingunn might be touring with them.

They have an email list you can sign up with, but I got busy after the show and forgot to sign up for it. Maybe Shawnte' can help me out w/that.

Yeah, sure, Kim. Just rub it in some more, will ya? I sooooooooo wanted to go to this, but it was just too short of notice to re-arrange things around here. Oh well, better luck next time... Thanks for the cool write-up, even if it sucks to hear about what I missed...

hey! oh, what a wonderful show! I just get so amazed at the unity between musicians, how they can jump into that flow together and just create such magic. A beautiful show with a great set list! Lots of happy-dancin and the guy who won the dance contest last time was there too, WOO-HOO (Heh!) Jessica--it was nice to meet you too! We went to Succotash in the City Market

Hey Anna, looks like all of the site is down, and not just my page.....maybe some temporary problem.

It's always fun meeting fanpagers for the first time. It's also that knowing there is already a common thread that runs through all of us that makes getting to know each other and liking each other so easy.

Yes, it was exciting to finally meet Jessica. Did anyone else here think KU97 was a guy instead of a girl (other than Beth)?

Thanks for the good time and putting up with my whacky ways.

For the record, I've never seen a gal look so groovy in Gary Louris style glasses as Beth does. Wish I could pull that look off that well.
