ryan adams - ashes and fire

Superb little album! I like it a lot. Great songs, great sound, superb vocal performances from Mr Adams.

I was planning on possibly buying this album. But after already purchasing the Jayhawks, Wilco and Reckless Kelly in the last month, I feel like I should maybe just wait. Too many of my favorites releasing music in a short period of time....and it feels like I'm going overboard. And I skipped the Ryan Adams album before this one....they have been getting more boring every time. Absolutely loved Whiskeytown. His first 3 solo albums were all good too. But meeting Mandy Moore must have done something to screw up his music. Only memorable track I can think of in the last 5 years is Halloweenhead.

The last 2 were boring as hell. This sounds more like JCN than anything else.

Don't let the last couple of albums put you off getting this.

Fine album in fairness to him. It's about time he settled down, honed his craft and released top notch material. He could rival anyone if he just didn't feel the need to release his every thought to the world.

That's a great setlist. Too bad the fucking hipster posers in Minneapolis scooped up the seats in less than 5 seconds a few weeks ago. Not kidding, 5 seconds.

Hipster Poser: I'm seeing Ryan Adams!

Hipster Poser 2: Who's that?

Hipster Poser: Don't know, but everybody is gonna be there.

Ha. Didn't he kick a guy out of a show once for yelling that?

I am going to take back my comment that the tickets were scooped up by hipster posers.

Looks like there are hundreds of tickets being marketed by brokers who supposedly are not legally allowed to use computer programs to scoop up tickets.

Don't even get me started.

I swear if I see another pair of thick-rimmed square glasses and skin-tight corduroys on a gaggle of PBR-swillin', iPhone-checkin' concert boys, I'm going to start an armageddon-sized rumble and end it all right there on the floor.

Last night I was at Bryant Lake Bowl, where they have paper scoring, for a birthday bowling session, and the kid next to me was scoring on his iPhone before entering anything on the sheet. And yes...he did have those birth-control glasses on.

So Ryan Adams is back to some semblance of stability and focus, eh?

How's the between-song banter? Is he keeping it in check? That's the one thing I can't stand about his shows. He can say a lot of stupid stuff.

There was some of that definitely, not too too much though. He kept getting egged on by the fans, which made it worse.. so he ended up doing a couple of funny improv numbers.

But yes overall he is much more focused and his voice sounds REALLY good. never off key and nailed all the high notes. I think he stopped smoking and isn't a complete mess like he used to be.
