Early Rod Stewart solo stuff is awesome

Gasoline Alley, Every Picture Tells A Story... stellar stuff. I guess these albums are effectively Faces albums with a whole bunch of additional musicians...

Burned myself a compilation for the car which absolutely fucking rocks!

1. Country Comfort
2. Maggie May
3. (Find A) Reason To Believe
4. Tomorrow Is A Long Time
5. Farewell
6. Mandolin Wind
7. My Way of Giving
8. Seems Like A Long Time
9. Gasoline Alley
10. You Wear It Well
11. Lady Day
12. You Put Something Better Inside Me
13. I’d Rather Go Blind
14. Missed you
15. Jo’s Lament
16. Crying Laughing Loving Lying
17. Man Of Constant Sorrow
18. Every Picture Tells A Story
19. Angel

Rod Stewart's subsequent career must be the biggest nose dive in musical history! Such a shame.

RIP Rod!

PS I can provide a link if anyone wants to check that comp out...

I agree.

But you need "Handbags & Gladrags" in that comp.

I've heard that song waaaaaaaaaaay too many times. Great tune, but I'm a bit sick of it at the moment. Plus I had to get it on 1 80 minute disc, so it had to go.

GREAT list, and agree with all your points about Rod.

I don't know what era they fall into, but I also really love his versions of "Mama You Been on My Mind," "the First Cut is the Deepest," and actually "We're having a party" and "Twisting the night away" just because I love those songs.

But he also had so many great songs with the Faces too, and it is hard to separate them as you point out. Some of my favorite Faces:

Cindy Incidentally
Had Me a Real Good Time
Love Lives Here
You're So Rude
You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything

Plus the ones we all know:

Glad and Sorry
Stay with Me
Ooh La La

- Glenn

Mandolin Wind is a great, not good song...

All good stuff there. Rod was very cool there for a time till he just started doing it for the cash.

Maybe his multiple marriages and kids forced his hand...
Wasn't there some thing about that bassline for Do You Think I'm Sexy being copied from 'Miss You' by the Stones or the other way around?

I saw Rod a few years back and he was workman-like on stage. Nothing fabulous but he did kick many soccer balls into the audience during the encores...

Talking Faces stuff - If cranking up "That's All You Need" doesn't make you rock out hardcore, nothing will.

I grew up listening to Rod...and two of my fave songs are First Cut, along with You Wear it Well. Great stuff.

Thumbs up

Totally agree, because of what happened in the mid 70s, his brilliant, acoustic based rock n roll, R&B styled work has often been overlooked. A few years back I picked up his Reason to Believe, the Mercury Anthology. It's a three disc set with all Rod's early Mercury albums (5 + odds and ends), ending in 1974. It is an unbelievably great set, I highly encourage those who need a little bit more than JayB's fine sampling to check it out. Fits perfectly too with the spring/summer vibe.
