By the way, I totally agree with you about the chick. I was outside having a smoke during her set. Even from outside, I was bored. She looked like someone who was at a kareoke bar. Her voice was ok but she didn't seem to be feeling her own music. I give everyone a chance, even the worst singer in the world (my best friend), but put some passion into it and you have my respect. I won't buy your record, but I'll admire your passion for what you do.

And, I was outside thinking, this chick came AFTER Tim? Talk about an injustice. Sorry Holly Molly, when you're playing with the big boys, you need to step up your game. Good try tho. I feel like a shit saying this because I don't believe in shooting down performing musicians (they're one step ahead of me!!) but when you're in that kind of company (GS, Tim) you sorta put yourself in firing range.

I could totally see her singing Mustang Sally at a kareoke bar.
Okay, enough. No more flogging holly...or molly. Nice boots tho.

Golden Smog in welcome return to Hollywood

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Golden Smog had the golden touch during much of its nearly two-hour performance Wednesday at Hollywood's Avalon.

Formed in 1992 by members of Minneapolis-area bands who had played together on and off over the years, the group's current incarnation includes ex-Jayhawks Gary Louris and Marc Perlman, Dan Murphy of Soul Asylum and former Run Westy Run singer Kraig Johnson, as well as Wilco's Jeff Tweedy (though so far he hasn't appeared on the current tour).

Some have called the band a "supergroup," but that's a bit of a misnomer because none of the source groups were ever commercial giants. It's really more of an Americana boys' club.

Touring behind its first album in eight years, "Another Fine Day" (Lost Highway), the band has penned new material, like the ache-filled surge of "You Make It Easy," that blended well with older songs like the country-baroque "Won't Be Coming Home."

Magic was definitely at work when the lead voices of Louris, Johnson and Murphy -- flashing vocal harmonies somewhere between Buffalo Springfield and the Eagles -- came together over bittersweet, yet gliding songs set to ringing guitars and lyrical keyboard flourishes.

Murphy shone on some of the most rocking numbers, especially during the new "Hurricane," which built up some appropriate gale force, and the entire group cut loose for "Frying Pan Eyes."

The night's covers included an atmospheric and moody reading of the "Hair" showtune and Three Dog Night hit "Easy to Be Hard" (drawn from the 1992 EP "On Golden Smog") and a buoyant version of David Bowie's glam-era "Starman," both featuring Louris.

Even with its skillful musicianship and gifted songcraft, the band could've trimmed the set by 20-30 minutes and been far more effective. About an hour or so into the show, the energy level began to wane with various (admittedly well-delivered) midtempo ballads, though the pace was picked up again.

Another problem was the unbilled insertion of the group's friend and occasional backing vocalist Holly Marilyn between an official opening set by Smog's Lost Highway labelmate, former Jayhawks drummer Tim O'Reagan. While O'Reagan played like-minded tuneful, rootsy material, Marilyn's generic-sounding pop-rock was out of place and seemed to wear down the audience's patience.

uh oh...flogging holly again.

But shit, it's true. For once I agree with a critic. Write this day down, people.

Thanks for the great pics Nat! I'll try to get some too on Saturday.

I'm literally jumping out of my skin, I just can't wait. This morning, I was paging through the Weekend section of the Phila. Inquirer while having my morning caffeine jolt and there it was...a nice big picture of GS (minus Tweedy). I'm going to laminate it and put it on my fridge

Yeah, I guess we're all in agreement on her. I would have her sing backing anyday. And she DID sound good on the GS tunes. But the solo set...Debbie Harry called, she wants her act back.

And Natalina - I love chicks in boots, you got great taste. lol.
