The Thorns

I am a sucker for Harmonies....
I have this cd for months and really only listened to it a handful of times...
I was so pleasantly surprised to find a cover of Blue in there... I really bought it not knowing anything about the content...
Today I put in the cd on my way to work... and was just digging it...
Anybody know if this was a one off thing?
I looked on thier official site and there was only very old info... I got excited to see them listed to play at Madison Square Garden Opening for John Mayer only to find that it is 2 year old info...
I hate when that happens

Question

I'm not sure what happened to the Thorn's. I saw them in St. Louis opening for the Jayhawks. They were very good. Maybe they were influenced by John Mayer, started running around in the halls of their high school, screaming at the top of their lungs, and were tossed into jail for disorderly conduct? John Mayer sucks!

I always thought it was a one off thing or maybe something fluid that could be returned to every once in a while like CSN or Golden Smog.

I actually love the album. I think the songs are great and their voices are wonderful. I would be a bigger fan of Shaun Mullins than the others however.

IMHO the Thorns' version of Blue is dreadful. It's like Madonna's version of American Pie!

This has got to be the first time in history that anything Matthew Sweet has done has been termed "adult contemporary" anything. Did you listen to the record at all, PW? I don't know if it could get much further from AC at all. More like Power Pop, which is precisely what Sweet is best known for, stylistically.

I do believe that "Blue" was ill-advised, and I'm quite sure I remember interviews with both Sweet and Droge when the record came out wherein they said they were uncomfortable doing it at all, more especially when they were pressed to do it almost note-for-note as the Jayhawks did it, but the label or the producer or whoever insisted.

When I saw them in Boston open for the Jayhawks, they wisely skipped over "Blue" in their set.

Anyway, for what they were, I enjoyed the Thorns. I'm not ever going to go out of my way to see them or buy their stuff, but there is no reason to demonize their work; it's quite respectable songcraft.

I saw them open for the Jayhawks in Omaha a few years ago. Matthew Sweet's family was there, and they had a large crowd in general. I thought that they had a great set (changed guitars incessantly, though) so immediately bought the CD and was underwhelmed. Oh well.

The whole concept was so promising, the guys involved, the covers (booklet and Jayhawks), I was so excited, and then

I liked it. I heard the Thorns' version of "Blue" before I ever knew about the Jayhawks, so I couldn't make a comparison at the time. I'm jealous of all of you who got to see them open for the Jayhawks!

Huh??? You prefer that cheesy 'Rockabye' twat to Matthew fuckin' Sweet?!? Madness baby!!

Anyway, i LOVE matthew Sweet... his best albums are fantastic, and his lesser albums are still great. That said, I thought the Thorns album was pleasant enough, but not a patch on solo Sweet. Still, i got the feeling that commercially it was the most sucessful thing any of the three band members had done, and I'm surprised there hasn't been a second album.

tap the brakes a little.

i dig on the matthew sweet as much as the next guy (and i seem to remember reading that sweet and louris are buddies) but i gave this "blue" cover a listen and it ain't all that.

i didn't realize "blue" needed to be covered.

this cover is in the same ballpark of horrible as ozzy's cover of "for what it's worth".

it might not qualify as a crime against humanity but it isn't moving us forward as a species either.

but that's just my opinion and i could be wrong.
