My coolest musical moment at First Ave. was...um...

...I never had one.

Not a stupid question, Wes.

But the answer is no. The 400 Bar does not rate as a substitute venue for First Avenue. It's tiny. I would guess it holds about 1/5 or 1/8 the capacity of First Avenue, and I just don't think they have the money to bring in the slate of acts that First Ave did.

And the beer...well...it's kind of hard to get access to on busy nights.

More reasonable alternatives to First Ave would be The Fine Line Music Cafe, The Quest <SIGH>, and...ummm... I dunno. The Cedar Cultural Center has good shows for a very select audience, but real rock shows don't happen there much. Seriously, there's no truly satisfactory replacement for First Avenue. If it does go down the tubes for real, the TC music scene is in a whole heap of trouble.

Yeah, but for the past year, all of the Clear Channel sponsored bands have been playing Fine Line and Quest anyway, so it is not like people are going to be too shocked. Both venues pale in comparison to First Ave, though.

Good news it seems....

November 5th, 2004
For Immediate Release
Contact: LeeAnn Weimar

First Avenue May Re-Open
Minneapolis. An agreement with the bankruptcy trustee John R Stoebner,
may get First Avenue's doors open after abruptly closing Tuesday, putting 120
people back to work.

In a meeting that took place this morning, Steve McClellan and Jack Meyers
met with Stoebner and struck up an agreement that may get the venue up and
running again as early as Saturday, November 13th.

701 Ventures LLC, the company that will run the new business, is set to
acquire the name First Avenue along with all of the clubs assets after the
former owner The Committee Inc. filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this week.

The arrangement still needs approval from a bankruptcy court judge, who is
scheduled to hear the case at 8:30am Friday, November 12th.

Usually, when my wife and I go to shows we try to get up front and into the mix. That weeknight, Greekgal suggested that we hang back a little bit, listen to the music.

We started and ended the night to the left of the stage as you face it, next to the edge of the dance floor. My wife sat on the rise or whatever it is that surrounds the stage and I kind of stood behind her. It must be said that the two of us consider Jay's music and his incredible voice to be one of the greatest blessings on music today.

I have heard the song "Tear Stained Eye" many times, but it has always had a special place in the heart of my family as our youngest daughter is named for a relative called Genevieve.

So I am in the perfect position, watching an absolutely kick ass show (the tour he did with Canyon), in my favorite place to ever see a band, and towards the end Jay did a couple of accoustic songs before the rocking finale. As you can probably guess, he played that song...perfectly. It is one of the few times that I couldn't hold back tears in thinking that I am with this woman who has helped to make my life so damn happy sharing a moment that could not have been scripted any better. I walked out of that show determined to do nothing more than remember just how much I care about her, on a daily basis. Nothing has changed to this day.

I only hope I can do it again, though it won't be at First Avenue next Thursday when Jay was supposed to perform again.

Sorry for the sappy message, I just have never been able to tell that story to anyone who would understand besides my wife...sniff, sniff.
We missed Son Volt last night. Had tickets, but let life take over again. Missed a chance to recapture that moment that happened so long ago it seems. Here's to better days.

Ok, so it looks like I've missed the news that First Avenue is closing. WHEN?
Cinders needs to pay attention, cuz she thought she was going to see Mason Jennings there soon.

Oh yeah, now for my coolest moment. My fav was when my son's band played 7th Street a couple years ago. Being a non city-slicker I don't have many First Ave. memories, but the 2nd best would be seeing the Jayhawks a few years back.

I love this thread, and I was at that show. And right after it, Alejandro Escovedo was in the Entry with his strings-laden orchestra (I dunno, maybe there were 6 people all told in that lineup). I had just discovered him, and, well, after Richard, who is impossible to top, I WAS blown away by Alejandro.
It was one of those evenings that simply won't ever go away...
I can't think of a human being who has ever heard 1952 VINCENT and not wished they had written it...
