road trippin'

So, for our anniversary this year, Mrs Haggis and I are considering a road trip. Now, we don't have much money - okay, we don't have ANY money - so, at this stage, it is a mere plan. Hopefully we can travel 3 days away from Chicago then stay some place for a night or two before doing the same/similar trip in reverse - 3 days back home. Anyone got any ideas as to which direction to head off in? We ain't gonna bother heading in the Wisco direction - did that last year so we are looking for something new. I did kinda wanna see St Louis again so it oculd be we head off in a Southern direction and spend night #1 there.

As well as ideas, I'd also be looking for any road-trippin' tips from the more seasoned RT'ers among you. I know a few of you have done this kinda thing before.

Haggy, you and Jenn should check out this place, Galena, IL:
http://www.galena.org/

It's only 3 hours away...horseback riding, winerys, shopping, romantic, etc. It's really LOVELY and it has hills...you remember those?

What time of year were you married, again, Haggis?

If it's in the late spring-summer, my advice to you is...GO WEST, YOUNG MAN! The beautiful Dakotas, Minnesota, Wyoming, and Montana await. And lest you be led to believe there is little to do in any of those places, consider:

ND Badlands and Teddy Roosevelt State Park
SD Badlands and National Grasslands
The Black Hills
Sturgis and Bear Butte
Lead, SD
Wounded Knee
Pompey's Pillar
Custer's Last Stand
The Missouri River
Devil's Tower
Minneapolis/Saint Paul (more things to do than I can list here in a week)
The Mississippi River
Duluth and the North Shore

Goodness...so many things to see and do, and all within easy 3 days' reach. And if you don't mind camping, there's lots of it to be had, and for cheap.

I make it a point to go out west at least every couple of years. It's one way to get yourself to realize just how big and geologically diverse this country really is. And it's a LOT more beautiful than most coasties or urbanites give it credit for.

Warm winds blowing
Heating blue sky
And a road that goes forever

Been thinking íbout it lately
Been watching some tv
Been looking all around me
At what has come to be
Been talking to my neighbour
And he agrees with me
Itís all gone crazy

Well my wife returns from taking
My little girl to school
Sheís got beads of perspiration
As she tries to keep her cool
She says that mess it donít get no better
Thereís gonna come a day
Someoneís gonna get killed out there
And I turn to her and say Texas
She says what?
I said Texas
She says what?
Theyíve got big long road out there

Warm winds blowing
Heating blue sky
And a road that goes forever
Iím going to texas

We got to get out of here
We got to get out of here

Well I got a little brother
Several meters high
Yea his built just like a quarterback
And he swears heíll testify
He says heís been to Texas
And thatís the only place to be
Big stakes, big girls, no trouble there
Thatís the place for me

Iím going to Texas
Iím going to Texas
Watch me walking
Watch me walking

Ok, I understand Haggy. One other place that might be cool (in addition to all that has been mentioned) is Kentucky. It's gorgeous in spring, because it's so darned green. Also, there is mammoth cave, which is really cool.

Haggy, this a a no-brainer... go to minneapolis st. paul!!!

The cheap hotel is the Days inn, just down the road from the Turf club.

Pick a date when there is a show to see, either Kraig playing, Mark Olson,,, should you be so lucky,... gary solo... or a jayhawks.

Honey dogs gig?

At the worst you can see Hookers and blow.. which has a honey dogs guy playing wed night at Gluek's...

You would not believe all the romantic restaurants there, its a foodie town.

Amazing breakfast places,,,, bowling alley restaurant

There is a modern art museum in a silver spiral building, that's a great afternoon.

Great tunes are essential. Try and find a way to use your ipod through the car stereo. I use an FM transmitter and it works purdy good.

PSHAW!

All he needs are two CDs. Hollywood Town Hall and Trace are all a self-respecting road tripper needs to stay happy and sane on a journey.
