Robinson effort not so cool
Winnipeg Sun

It's an age-old story: Cool rock star marries hot young starlet. Cool rock star takes hot young wife on the road with his long-running band. Soon, cool rock star no longer feels the same about band. Doubtlessly encouraged by hot young wife, cool rock star stupidly decides to leave band. Cool rock star cuts hair, grows ugly Tom Green-style goatee and starts writing introspective romantic ballads about how much he loves hot young wife. Cool rock star moves to Paris to record rootsy, soulful album short on rockers and long on syrupy glop like Safe in the Arms of Love, Could You Really Love Me?, Untangle my Mind and Katie Dear. Cool rock star's first solo album includes DVD with tepid acoustic performances and documentary featuring shot of wife gazing adoringly into cool rock star's eyes as he sings romantic lyrics to her. Suddenly, cool rock star isn't so cool anymore. Or so popular.

Thankfully, there's still hope for ex-Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, who chucked his perfectly good band after hitching up with Kate Hudson.

After all, this cliche story almost always ends the same: Rock star gets dumped by hot young wife, reunites with old band and makes the kickass album he's been suppressing all these years.

Suddenly, rock star is cool again.
