View Full Version : Vinyl Kick!

Been on a Vinyl LP kick this week and have been having a ton of fun reminding myself how great the format is - makes you pay a bit more attention than these newfangled formats the kids these days are all over, at least.

Here's what's been spinning at the axeeugene household recently:

Neko Case - The Worse Things Get... (http://kingsroadmerch.com/neko-case/view/?id=4413&cid=94)

Martin Devaney - House Of Rust (http://martindevaney.com/2013/10/03/press-for-house-of-rust/)

The Ashtray Hearts - The Strangest Light (http://freeelection.org/) (Holy HELL is this good!)

Golden Smog - Blood On The Slacks (http://www.amazon.com/Blood-Slacks-Vinyl-Golden-Smog/dp/B000OCXMC2/ref=tmm_vnl_title_0)

Gary Louris - Vagabonds (http://www.amazon.com/Vagabonds-Vinyl-Gary-Louris/dp/B000YKNJJ0/ref=tmm_vnl_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1198007427&sr=8-1)

Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills - The Super Session (http://www.amazon.com/Super-Session-Vinyl-Kooper-Bloomfield/dp/B002BEXENS) (Vintage Copy)

The Rank and File (http://www.discogs.com/Rank-File-Rank-And-File/release/2786930) (Alejandro Escovedo's old band - Vintage Copy)

Wilco - AM (http://www.amazon.com/M-180-Gram-Vinyl-bonus/dp/B001R4MEZC/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1387329112&sr=1-2&keywords=wilco+am) (Check out my old Amazon review :) )

Up next: the 2003 180 gram remaster of the old standby, Dark Side of the Moon (http://www.amazon.com/The-Dark-Side-Moon-Vinyl/dp/B00008AWNY)!

Noticing a little bit of electrical hum in the background between songs and when nothing's playing. Unit's grounded pretty well, so I imagine the interference is coming from somewhere else. Any of you vinyl pros got advice for where to look to track it down? Both the power and RCA cables are wound and zip tied together - possible culprit?

Even with the tiny annoyance, this is great. Gotta do this more often!

Thanks man! yes, i would recommend separating the cables as much as possible and also try to plug it into an outlet that has nothing else plugged into it. Otherwise it could be one of the components inside there that is a bit off.

How does Gary's album sound? i need to start listening to my vinyl again...

thanks for mentioning your amazon review - it was an interesting read.

Decided to dust off the ol' Audio Technica phonograph and have been spinning some vinyl the last few weeks and have made some wild discoveries. Played some old Columbia Sampler records from 1970-72 era. These were often double platters featuring some well known names from the label and some lesser knowns as a way of getting the word out. I was really blown away by the musicianship of a lot of these 'no-names' particularly the 'horn' bands.

After listening to the samplers 'different strokes', 'fill your head with rock' and 'music people' was mightily impressed by:

Al Kooper, especially the BS&T debut
Dreams - horn driven classy rock n roll
Ballin' Jack

For you Jayhawk fans Tom Rush's Merrimack County is a must listen

I think putting on a platter, committing the 20 minutes to a side while sitting and not doing anything else is probably the equivalent of anything you can find in 10 self help books.
