My last visit was yesterday.

I know some people got fed up with the trolls. I know some, for lack of better words, "bad blood" went down between people. I guess I lucked out--I ignored trolls and the people I just didn't think I'd get along with personality wise, and hopefully didn't piss anyone off here.

So, on a rational level I get why people left/don't visit that much. But on an irrational level, sometimes I wish you guys would visit here a little more often. :(

Mystic,
You're always a good spirit on here. I am sure you didn't piss anyone off. :)

For me, I did not leave because of anyone or disinterest (trolls or not). I have not been around because I have spent all my spare "internets" time on facebook. There I can talk about the Jayhawks, Black Crowes, Cardinals, or any of the bird bands I love so dearly.:D It was merely a way to connect to my family and friends in one place - nothing against this place. The friends I have made here and my love of this band will never change. This community has a real connection still. <3

FUCK FACEBOOK.

I'm not listening to much music at all these days...but that didn't and doesn't have anything to do with my presence or lack of presence here. This place was once good for all manner of entertainments.

It was a fun place for a while, but it stopped being fun a long time ago. I've been and left more than once. Now, I'm only half here. In general, I find *all* aspects of cyber-life far less fulfilling than they once were. I'm a much bigger fan of the real world. It's too bad so few other people seem to agree.

I still check in here a couple times a week. I still carry the torch ha ha. Was some great fun to be had here. The music appreciation was only a tiny fraction of it.

Having said that I'm now spinning Mark and Gary Ready For The Flood. Been a long time since I've played that.

I'm on Facebook but every time I log in I hate it a little bit more. It's a bloody leviathan. I use Twitter a lot because I've so little of actual worth to say that 140 characters is plenty!

Still after all the water's been under the bridge it's good to know y'all are still fit and healthy and still out there making waves.

Keep on truckin' you good, good folkers!

Welcome back Angelyne! Gary was wondering where you went to! haha

i still check in from time to time.. love this little community!

one can get quite immersed in facebook though.. but i still like the idea of being able to follow certain discussions on message board threads more easily.

still hoping for some more Gary solo dates!
also i heard of another album that Gary appears on but am waiting for more info on the release date, etc.

I still check in most weekdays, at least for a minute or two.

I am vehemently anti-Facebook (the site itself, not necessarily anyone's personal page). Have never had an account and hopefully never will.

So after a long stretch of time where I didn't listen to much of 'this kind' of music, I had been playing a lot of guitar lately and dug out all my old sheet music for the Jayhawks, Being-There-era Wilco, and probably everyone's 2 favorite Golden Smog records.

Guess what? Those songs still sound pretty good!...

Yes, The Facebook can be evil. I joined many years ago since I work at a university. Some students I worked with asked me to create an account so I could help them with events. At that time you needed an ".edu" address. Oh how times have changed. My friend calls it FacePlant. ;)

In any case - music is still front and center. Been listening to Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. Tim Bluhm of Mother Hips awesome and talented wife with Tim also in the band on the geetar. Can't wait to see Gary and the Jayhawks (Not Gary Louris featuring the Jayhawks, mind you.) again. Will be catching the Crowes and Jim James in spring.

Good to hear you're all well and keepin' the coolest fanpage around going!!

This place is much nicer than that behemoth Walmart of blog sites known as Facebook. And to think they've moved their headquarters into the middle of the mountains one hour from here in the lowest taxed county on the eastern seaboard... Rumor has it Twitter's moving there.
this board is a nice respite from the craziness that goes on elsewhere. Stay hungry, just a little lonesome, and sing with your fingers here forever good people. :)

I've been on many fan message boards, and they've all slowed to a crawl. I think a big reason is the repetition of subject matter. Just like this thread, there was a similar thread called "Allrighty Listen Up" here in June 2012, so I'll cheat and copy what I wrote there:

"Sorry to see this board slowing down, like so may bands' forums. I can relate this forum's evolution to my primary message board, The MTHead forum. Started in 1995 by KMTT-FM in Seattle, they dropped it several years ago while it was still very busy, but avid Mtheads kept it going as The Mthead Board. With DJs and other KMTT personnel's postings dwindling, partly because of Mtheads' negative remarks about KMTT's playlist, Mtheads losing interest in the station (ipods) and social gatherings, subjects becoming repetitious, personal squabbles spurred by political discussions escalating to venomous personal attacks, Facebook with its ability to block undesirables, activity dwindled to the point where now I'm about the only one left posting of the 744 members.

I guess I'm just a diehard that likes the idea of message boards that are geared to particular subjects and with table-of-topics, easy to navigate. The Mthead board topics were geared to AAA music and local music happenings, as opposed to all and anything to wade through at Facebook. Message boards are easier to pick and choose what to read, whereas, like with Mtheads writings on FB, I pretty much have to look at the start of everything they write, and don't give a sh*t about 90% of that. As a nostalgia fan, I don't like the way topics disappear at FB either. I use FB though because for many live music venues and bands, that's the only place they have a presence, the only place to check their schedules."

I don't think there's a single apostrophe or quotation mark in the entire text of The Road, in spite of the fact that McCarthy insists on employing contractions throughout and about 40% of the book is dialogue. That's not style; that's deliberate obtuseness, which I will not abide.

I still visit this place nearly every day in spite of the McCarthyan sparseness of the posts. Memories of Better Days keep me coming back.

Ah grammar...
Grammar, thou rideth up against all sensibilities and enticements. Thou maketh woe against verse that boundeth over and around rocks of structure.
Grammar, the learning of which, so often such a loathsome task, the lack of which brought the wooden yardstick down on knuckles in the Catholic school.
Ye are a taskmaster of the English language. Forever are you left clinging to sensibility, left holding the threads of culture in a useful weave, respected only for your usefulness, ignored when one wishes to live at play. Indeed, ye are the playground. You offer a break from the classroom, yet children run away into fields of curiosity and sometimes refuse to come back to your pavement; your lines.
And oh the language you defend. Either in decay or a whisper of poetics, depending on the reader's will to collect words for a dusty mantel shelf.
Grammar, my good friend, I don't give you enough of my own time. I am still happy to be your neighbor. Don't feel bad. Indeed, pull up a chair and sip ye some roobios with me. Wax poetic if you wish, all your commas in place.

Don't participate in or view facebook, twitter, other group or fan pages. This is it. Not nearly as fanatical about it as couple years ago, now still check in about once a week to see what's happening. Glad I do, I wouldn't have known about Gary's upcoming show in Wabasha otherwise. Looking forward to that. Though I don't have anything to compare it to, many, many good folks here.

The board mom left the face of this place Jan. 2011

She will never return.

As for me, I rarely lurk, (last time was Feb.) but when I do, I do so with tiny arrows waiting in my tiny quiver and will shoot them at anyone of my choosing at anytime of my choosing.

And all the complaining and /or lamenting about some romanticized vision of the "good old days" here, wishing people would come back, etc. baffles me.
So start over again and make a new "good old days" of your own with brand new people and memories. Why would some of us want to waste our time eating cold beans sitting in the snow when we can be eating grilled salmon by the warm fireside? There is only so much time and energy to spend in one's lifetime.

It doesn't matter who is pretending to be someone else in our *invite only* group via facebook. Go ahead and lurk there all you want. The desperate and pathetic have already threatened a scheme to hack into it with questionable success. So what, who cares? It's not complicated. If you open your mouth and piss your shit into the face of our place, your ass gets kicked out (and I mean hard) by the moderator; a bitching babe wearing boots from Brooklyn.

I don't personally care for facebook itself either, (there needs to be an alternative) but what some of you don't realize is that the group page we have there is pretty much EXACTLY the way it is here. It's not like you have to sift through crap to read our posts. It's just us, just like it's all of you here. Facebook is just the venue that we have the site coming through. It could be anywhere really.

Anyway, it's like you think you're "getting back at us" for something. You can't accept that we have this more pleasant universe to exist in. A place to play nice makes you squirm with frustration; the undeniable fact that it's impossible to be ruined by you (duh....WINNING)

eggshells

As frustrated as I was when the trolls were active here, I will say without reservation that Sandy's laissez faire moderation at the jayhawksfanpage board has always been infinitely superior to any censorious approach.

If this place quashed curmudgeonly contrarianism, I would have been gone a decade ago, either by force or my own volition.

I'll never be a member or a visitor to any "think and act right or you're out" internet locale. Never.

And for the record, I was invited to whatever the FB group was shortly after its inception. But when I saw the one bylaw: "No Slagging," I wrote, "No slagging? Fuck that shit. I'm out of here," and never went back. A place that will not tolerate dissent is no place for me. Because sometimes shit sucks and you gotta say so.

Here is a newsflash for you fuckers. There was about as much a person as "Board Mom" on this place as I am the president of Greece. Just because a person is an overzealous fan girl does not mean she is somehow of relevance any more than the rest of us here.

Could see it if a number of other members came up with that nickname, but it was a self congratulatory title bestowed upon herself for reasons I'll never care to understand.

Have fun on your pansy ass little facebook page showering each other with candy corn and butterscotch. I'll take general snark anytime of the day.

I don't remember how the nickname started, but I had no problem with it. Perhaps because she is older than me, and the first person I met from this group, and introduced me and some other people to the fan community, I thought it was an apt nickname. I also thought it was all in fun. I kind of liked referring to her as board mom.

Great stuff...

WANKER!

:P

Knowing The Guy Who Plays greekguy in real life as I do, I understand his sentiments better than most here, I think. The point he's been making in his special, uniquely offensive way is that this place - with its relative anonymity which sometimes breeds the aforementioned cantankerousness - is superior to FB-oriented places if only because it allows (nay, encourages) sometimes unpopular sentiments to be expressed. A place that requires a high degree of decorum and positivity and demands "No slagging" encourages little more than sycophancy, and no one - politician, author, teacher, student, artist, or musician - benefits from almost unequivocal adulation.

An interesting part of this thread proves the Jayhawks Fanpage Board's necessity: As Calexico pointed out before the rest of us, one person chose to use this place as a safety valve for an obviously extremely personal bout of negative energy generated in that other place. Say what you will about the other curmudgeons here, at least we know the appropriate level of personal investment there ought to be online...

The real world is a much more interesting place!

doriann
06-20-2013, 02:49 PM
why do any of you even care?
our place on Facebook takes nothing away from this one, so why do you care?
we have chosen to run the page the way we are happy running it. why do you care?
we decided we would rather focus on the positive, rather than on the negative.
In a world filled with negativity at every turn, why would you want to go to a forum about your favorite band and read a bunch of people crapping all over what you love, essentially turning it into a place loaded with the same negativity that people try to escape from?
I honestly don't understand.
And when I come here and say something with no nastiness at all, just hey, we are not what you think we are, I get verbally attacked.
At least on my page, no one has to worry about that kind of nonsense.
But for some reason, people being nice to each other somewhere else has set off a shit storm of unnecessary posts here. Strange.
If you find our page boring and uninteresting, we don't really care. At least we know we have a place to go and talk about the music without being insulted. If insulting people is what makes this place more interesting, you can keep it.

I belong to both this fanpage board and the FB page. I enjoy visiting both and there are people at both locations that I enjoy talking about music with. I made some good friends here and keep in touch with them even if they no longer post here.

I would not classify the FB page as a location where people have to walk on eggshells or have to fear being asked to leave if they say something "wrong." I would say that the FB page runners look at HOW something is said, not WHAT is said. For example: "You should really check out Mark Olson's solo work, I think there are some great songs on there!" would go over better than "What kind of a Jayhawks fan are you if you don't own any Mark Olson solo cds?" In other words, the FB page is asking for opinions, even dissenting ones, to be expressed with some tact.

I remembered a thread from a few years ago about Son Volt: http://www.jayhawksfanpage.com/boards/showthread.php?t=13380&page=2&highlight=son+volt

Here, a fanpager asks for some recommendations on what Son Volt albums to buy. Some responses are...well, not very welcoming. I remember that I didn't want to participate in this thread, though I had the same question as the asking fanpager. However, I didn't really want to be on the other side of a "what kind of an alt-country fan are you?!?" response. I guess my answer would be "one who doesn't own a Son Volt album." Sorry to disappoint you.

But I digress. My point is that on the FB page, people are more likely to just offer some suggestions without questioning whether one is a true alt-country fan based on the cds he or she currently does or does not own. The same message, "you should get X cd by Y artist" but delivered differently. I hope that made sense.

So basically, the folks that got tired of the trolling and some of the nastier-delivered messages have an alternate meeting place they run as they see fit. People that are cool with that joined. People who aren't, didn't join. Some people, like me, go to both places. I admit I am pretty thin skinned so I just avoid/ignore/don't respond to the posts that might upset me. I (hopefully) don't have any bad blood here with anyone, at least not with the people I have met personally. I know there are people here who don't like Facebook in general, which is certainly understandable and you probably have wasted less hours than I have ;), so if I go to a show or want to wish a happy birthday, I make sure to do so here too.

Ok, I'll shut up now. I need to get some sleep before I catch two nights of Wilco and one night of Neko Case at the Solid Sound Festival.

why do any of you even care?
our place on Facebook takes nothing away from this one, so why do you care?
we have chosen to run the page the way we are happy running it. why do you care?
we decided we would rather focus on the positive, rather than on the negative.

Focus on the positive all you want. It wasn't you who soured this thread; it was someone else who accentuated the "*invite only*" aspect of "our" page where we "desperate and pathetic" folk are clearly unwelcome.

You are free to have your page, and I'm happy for you.

But to me, it does feel like a few people chose to take their ball and go home where they could control the environment in the way that would benefit *them*, and it's clear the posting on this board has dropped to nil in the offing. I think that's a sorry state of affairs, since here, the REAL boardmama (who has NEVER abandoned her children the way some OTHERS have, BTW) allows all points of view to have their say.

This is really the *only* reason I care. I literally never visit Facebook, and never will. The only reason it matters is because it's clearly affected the way this place used to work, in all its dysfunctional glory.

BTW, mystic_spiral_3, if you note in the thread you linked, the "not very welcoming" tone very quickly changes to a "HOLY CRAP, HOW GOOD IS TRACE?" tone. There's a place in the world for the acerbic, and I don't think people understand that well enough. I'll bet it got you to listen to Trace, now, didn't it? Maybe moreso than a "Hey - yeah - you should listen to that. I think you'll like it" would have. Sometimes shock works.

No, it didn't. I still don't have that album.

I did re-read the thread before I linked it, and I indeed saw that eventually people wrote back saying they liked the album. That's great if they do. I simply wanted to illustrate an example, and I remembered how I felt when I initially read that thread.

First of all. Mystic Sprial, go get Trace. Send me the receipt and I will reimburse you. It's better than every The Jayhawks album except SOL, which is equally as good, but not necessarily better.

B. Why does this web board, of all boards, think the word "Jayhawks" is not a properly spelled word?

iii. Aside from blatantly offensive personal attacks on members/posters, it's bullshit to have rules about decorum. If somebody wants to lambast certain members of a band for having a horrible voice and ruining what was a good thing without him or her by coming back and not allowing everyone to hear the really good songs that the band played without him or her, then one should be allowed to do so using any words he or she might choose. If one wants to point out that a certain band member's horrible miserable voice and stage presence actually ruins the songs he or she was a part of when he or she was originally in the band, then one should be allowed to do so without being kind and respectful. The making and buying of music is a commercial enterprise, and most of us have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars in our pursuit of seeing and hearing this particular band. It's not fucking community theater.

4. This place used to be a lot more fun, in part because of the dissent and resulting arguments, but the dorks playing all foo foo cuddlepants on the facebook* really didn't contribute to that fun much to begin with.

*People are still using facebook? wtf

AxeEugene, I appreciate the civil response, thank you.

Yes, what happened is exactly as you described.

Picture this forum as a big sandbox where sand lovers come to play. There are a few people who don't know how to play without throwing sand in other player's eyes. Some players think this is fine, as the players should be able to express themselves however they see fit. Some other players simply adore playing in the sand, but they are really not too keen on having sand thrown in their eyes. So they ask a few times, could those players please be respectful and not throw sand? And the sand throwers say, too bad, we like throwing sand, we are allowed to throw sand, and we will continue to throw sand. So the players who are not big on having sand thrown in their eyes decide to go to another sandbox and play nicely with the sand, as it is really more to their benefit not to have sand thrown in their eyes, cause it hurts! The sand throwers back in the original sandbox are all like, why would you go there? You are not even allowed to throw sand in each others eyes over there! And now there are not enough people to have good fun in our sandbox anymore!

This is pretty much what happened.
I am sure it has affected the amount of posts over here, but what were we supposed to do? Just stay in the same sandbox and continue to have sand kicked around?

Respectfully,
Doriann

I might buy Trace someday. I have nothing against it. I liked "Drown" when it was on the radio. It's one of many albums that I probably would like and simply haven't gotten around to buying yet. I've noticed that since I finished school I don't have as much time to sit and absorb cds. Even with my favorite groups, I've purchased their new stuff but I haven't committed the songs to memory yet. :(

As for spelling Jayhawks, that is weird though not surprising. My guess is the board software has the same spellchecker that Microsoft Word does. Try writing chemistry lab reports on a program that doesn't know how to spell many of the chemical names.

Buy Trace. Or just Spotify it some evening when you are at a loose end. You'll love it I bet.

Just read that SV thread was talking about and I think a lot of the humour and mock horror was misconstrued. Axe and Seņor Pickle come across as having a British flair to their humour. In my eyes, at any rate.

Christ, you sound like I used to. NOT GOOD, SIR! We'll have to fix that. Still working on The October Surprise, so good time or not, block off some days!

Also, "DAMN YOUR EYES!"

I have my fingers crossed for October but I don't wanna make any rash promises that I can't keep at this stage.

As for Feldman, that is freaky. It reminded me of a dream I had late last week which, for the life of me I cannot remember, save for the thought that having Feldman's eyes would be handy in some sort of way - maybe I was trying to operate two cameras at once? I dunno. Weird, anyway.

I dunno how the players survive it cos I get all kinds of aches and pains watching it- sore back and shoulders, tight hamstrings, mysterious bruises etc etc. My hat is off to those fellas, taking that crazy punishment all the time.

I'm glad the Blackhawks won because Boston beat Pittsburgh. Granted, the Penguins didn't put up much of a fight.
