Jack Klugman and Charles Durning died on Christmas eve.

The last of the Twelve Angry Men and the most highly-decorated of the first wave on Normandy are no more.

What a shit month for American/World icons.

So today, in addition to my traditional viewing of A Christmas Story, I think I'll watch 12 Angry Men and The Hudsucker Proxy, too!

Poor old Charles. If you have the Military Channel you can sometimes catch him narrating a D-Day Landings documentary - at least, the American beach anyway. I don't think the documenmtary included the other beaches/nations if I recall. Was good stuff.

Reading back on Durning's experiences in WWII you could almost say that what happened to the characters in Band Of Brothers was *his* story.

Injuries, English hospitals, back to the frontline. D-Day, Omaha, The Bulge.

I loved his portrayal of Tommy Gavin's dad on Rescue Me.

Klugman in his portrayal of Oscar Madison was a staple of my childhood tv viewing. Of course, he was integral to 12 Angry Men and was great in Wine and Roses but for me he is always Oscar.
