While Bryn is resting his old and weary bones, here's a few short notes on the show from last nite.

We met Jim and his lovely wife at the front of the venue, Jim wearing his Twins outfit. Something Gary immediatly noticed when the show started, citing the latest score by the Twins and starting a short discussion with Jim on local Minnesotean politics  ;)
The venue was much nicer, a bit of a 70's nightclub feel with dimmed lights, couches and carpeted floor and walls. The crowd was a good 250 people but very subdued. Apparently that's typical in Brisbane I heard. Halfway the show a fierce discussion on sit down or stand up (the first 6-7 rows were sitting on the floor, god knows why) and the guys tried to get people on their feet. But they just sat there...very weird:confused:
The sound mix was amazing and Gary and Mark complemented the sound guy for his work several times. Setlist wise...no surprises here.

We had our pics taken and I took pics of the performance. But one of the memory cards is giving an error now so I hope I can retrieve the data when I get back home. But the pics of the meet&greet turned out ok!

Later on, Bryn & I were having some beers and Gary walked across and started chatting. Some of the things I will mention here is:

- The re-issues will have some very, very rare stuff on them as bonus tracks. The rarities cd is just a taste of what to come with the re-issues.
- If I got it right, there will be more DVD stuff as well, in addition to the 'standard' DVD.
- Gary promised himself he will downscale the touring after summer. (Well he said that before :D )

Tonite the last nite for us. Melbourne sucks BTW I don't like it all. Hopefully the show will make for it...problably!

Well, this was a pretty heavy duty tour for him and Mark...he probably wants to go home a just rest and relax. Can't say I blame him. :D :D

Ha ha! Very cool....great group shot of you guys. The Brisbane aka "Bandana" Gig sounds like a great name for a live C.D. of that show:D

Excellent suggestion, Mrs K. I had some trouble though with my right mic because the clip I used to fix it in place broke. That caused the (sensitive) mic to record movement of the mic itself. So I may have to delete that channel and copy the left to right. But it wouldn't make that of a difference.

I recorded all three shows but god knows when I feel like editing and upload the stuff etc.

Hey Lenno, thanks for the evening recap of the Brisbane show. I'd have to agree with you that the crowd was a bit odd... Maybe even lame... I've experienced that a few times now here. We went to a Crowded House show and the entire crowd sat through the first 90% of the show, arms crossed... clapping politely. Even Uncle Neil couldn't get them on their feet... (admittedly, it WAS the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, but the crowd was still quite passive).

Otherwise, it was a great night. A pleasure to meet Lenno and Bryn. I reckon they'd fit in seamlessly with the likes of Caffeine Zombie, Jedey, Sandy and the Chicago crew, etc... Good folks who know their stuff and dedicated fans above all else! I think Lenno is the Dutch Ope (CZ will know what I mean here, and it's a compliment).

Anyway, it was great to see Mark and Gary together again. Harmonies were great... They seemed to be having fun despite the crowd. I reckon if they ever come back "down under", I'll make the trip to Sydney and/or Melbourne and skip the Brisbane show. I think I'm spoiled from the years of great First Ave crowds.

We grabbed the setlist and got is signed by the fellas, so I'll scan that at some point and post it here.

Hope you guys had fun in Melbourne!

Cheers,
Jim

Great pictures Lenno! I bet you never expected that the boys would make it down under eh? I'm so glad they did, obviously some very special fans there ;)

Nice that Bryn, you and Hiddenbeach got a chance to hang together. Thanks for the info on the release...so exciting!!!

Real pleasure to meet Jim and his lovely wife in Brisbane. While the sitting down thing was a bit funny it did afford a real chance to listen and observe in a way that standing up doesn't always allow. When we did stand up we got heckled from behind to sit down, so we went with the flow. Gary was drinking Coopers Pale Ale both in Sydney and in Brisbane, he mentioned they had had a few drinks the night before. I told him that the yeast that they use in Coopers is well over two hundred years old and he replied that it may be time they got some new stuff.:D Might explain why he was drinking something else in Melbourne;) :D I sure hope that the size of the response that Mark and Gary got over here is enough to make them seriously look at the possibility of a full band tour down under.

Found a review of the gig in Brissie:

http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/reviews/events/18579/Gary-Louris--Mark-Olson-The-Jayhawks-Halfway--The-Troubadour-Brisbane-220509.htm

The Troubadour’s status as Brissy’s alt-country temple remains undaunted following recent high-profile shows by Jolie Holland and John Doe/Jim White, and tonight’s visit of a groundbreaking Minnesotan institution is a further reputation-boosting factor for the cosy venue. Regrettably, I’ve turned up too late to witness one-third of Halfway – Chris and John – set the requisite vibe with some quality, locally-distilled storysongs, however fifteen minutes later, I cast aside my disgruntled thoughts about tonight’s music program starting too early even by The Troub’s laidback standards as The Jayhawks-fronting headliners walk on for their second-ever Australian (and first-ever Brisbane) appearance.

Long revered as Americana’s own Lennon/McCartney, Gary Louris and Mark Olson instantly have the crowd in the palms of their seasoned hands at the first strummed G chord. Visually an unlikely, standup-quality pairing – the shaggy-haired, bespectacled Louris could be anyone’s geeky uncle, while the slightly portly, bandanna-sporting Olson is a different sight altogether – the two singer-songwriters wrap the room in pitch-perfect vocal interplay and deft guitar work, sending all and sundry into Harmony Heaven. Cuts from this year’s superb Ready For The Flood album and ‘90s masterworks Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow The Green Grass don’t so much provoke thoughts about the recent deluge as bring up a whole spectrum of moods and emotions ranging from wistful (none more so on the lilting Saturday Morning, Sunday Street) to radiant (_Two Angels_ and the evergreen Waiting For The Sun).

Fittingly, we don’t get anything from the Olson -free Sound Of Lies and Smile, yet whatever frictions that tore up the creative partnership in the first place are nowhere to be felt underneath the dollops of honeyed vocals, The Everly Brothers-like Over My Shoulder chiming like a bundle of bells. Jam-heavy When The Wind Comes Up sees Louris (whose six-string and harmonica mastery is to die for) and his compadre tear it up on their Gibson acoustics and the main set closer Settled Down Like Rain incites a bona fide ovation. Following a rousing encore rendition of Rainy Day Music’s ever-gorgeous Angelyne, the duo bow out in majestic fashion with Tomorrow The Green Grass’s stunning opener Blue. The song’s soaring chorus stuck in my head for days to come, I head home convinced that the pared-down, “unplugged” Jayhawks rock – and quietly mesmerise – just as compellingly as the electric version. Rainy day music par excellence.

I think the writer was just trying to emphasize the contrast between them and the contrast between what they look like as opposed to what comes out in their performance....actually, the review is very endearing overall, in awe of the experience "harmony heaven" / "mesmerize" / "pitch perfect vocal interplay".

Don't you all know that "geeky" really means cool these days anyway? :D

Not really a running joke other than maybe off-handedly about Vaginal Backwash. Coopers was discussed by Bryn and I a few years back in one of the many beer threads.

Well, now time passed and now it seems
Everybody's having them dreams.
Everybody sees themselves walkin' around with no one else.

"Half of the people can be part right all of the time,
Some of the people can be all right part of the time.
But all the people can't be all right all the time"

I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

"I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours,"
Bob Dylan said that.

"Now there's a silent screaming artist lurking in everyone somewhere inside of them at some place in some form".
I said that!

(Harmonica, geetar, end of song):D

Lineage: SP-CMC-8 microphones (AUD) -> Sony HiMD MZ RH10 ATRAC3plus256 kbps-> SonicStage -> WAV -> SoundForge (editing)-> FLAC.

Notes:
1) Although enjoyable, this recording has some incidental mic movement which resulted in incidental crackling or thumping sounds. On some occasions the crowd is a bit chatty.

2) On track 11 you'll hear some "discussion" going on in the crowd and on stage whether to sit down or stand up. The first half of the crowd was sitting on the floor for some reason. When people tried to stand up they got heckled by other audience members.

3) "Walking Through Nevada" was played after track 11 but was not recorded.
